I used to hate when people would push meditation on me. It reminded me of Dwight K. Schrute peddling his beets. The whole concept of it sounded awful (sit and do nothing? I’ve got shit to do!), and I definitely couldn’t imagine a situation in which it could ever actually help me, let alone be the best use of my time.

But then a doctor whose opinion I respect said it could help with anxiety. He recommended twice daily, for at least 10 minutes each time. UGH!!! I was horrified, to say the least. But because I believed him, and because none of my other methods for coping with anxiety were working at the time, I tried it.

That was two years ago, and today meditation is a solid part of the way I take care of myself every day. It’s as normal and important to me as eating, hugging my dog or laughing with my husband at stupid internet videos. And it’s a great complement to getting all my crappy thoughts out of my head and onto paper because it essentially gets me out of my head and into my body—even if just for a few minutes.

Which is fantastic. Because it can get pretty crazy in my head

And even if I sit down to meditate and instead spend the whole time mentally going over my to-do list, it’s all good. It’s all part of the practice.

All of that said, meditation isn’t for everyone, and I definitely ain’t here to push it on you Schrute-style. Get the meditations. Get out of your head for a bit. Put some space between you and the thoughts that cause you to feel badly. I promise you it’s time well spent.
